Masters Collection

My master’s collection is an experimental exploration of deconstructing and reconstructing second-hand denim garments, aiming to challenge the traditional use of denim while addressing the environmental consequences of its mass production. By employing draping techniques on repurposed denim, the collection reimagines the fabric’s original form and function, transforming it into sculptural, thought-provoking designs that invite a new understanding of denim's timeless beauty and value.

Drawing on Derrida’s concepts of deconstruction, trace, and différance, the collection challenges traditional notions of garment construction and the body’s relationship to clothing. Additionally, Maria Skivko’s analysis of the conflict between form, function, and ideology in fashion design serves as a guiding principle, providing a framework for the exploration of deconstructive strategies within this work.

The creative process was also deeply influenced by Wabi Sabi, the Japanese philosophy that embraces the beauty of imperfection, and the Korean aesthetic of Mak&bium, which values harmonious balance and subtlety. These philosophies played a significant role in shaping the visual outcome of the collection, encouraging a focus on the natural aging process of the denim and the beauty found in asymmetry, imperfection, and transformation.

Each piece represents a conversation between fashion’s past and future, questioning the throwaway culture of fast fashion while celebrating denim’s potential for longevity. Through innovative design methods, the collection redefines denim’s role in fashion, promoting a circular approach that extends the fabric's life cycle. The garments are both a visual and emotional reflection of denim's environmental impact, encouraging viewers to form a deeper, more conscious relationship with their denim pieces.

The collection highlights the durability and versatility of denim, showcasing its ability to be reinvented and to tell stories of transformation and sustainability. By rethinking denim through the lens of deconstruction and Eastern philosophies, the work challenges conventional fashion ideologies, urging a renewed appreciation for denim’s lasting value and its potential for reinvention.
